Aplington-Parkersburg will host a pair of ranked Denver teams in their first rematches of the basketball season Tuesday. The Cyclones got a sweep in a doubleheader when the teams met in December.
Coming off a triumphant 65-64 win over Wapsie Valley Friday, the Falcon boys will look to stay in the running for a conference title. The Falcons, #8 (2A) Cyclones and #9 (2A) Union each have one league loss, behind #7 (2A) Grundy Center at 8-0. Head Coach Aaron Thomas.
“We’ve just got to stay paced,” Thomas says. “There’s lot of teams with one loss yet, and obviously Grundy is undefeated. And so we need to keep winning to give us a chance. And it’s just one game at a time. And our league is very balanced. I love that we’re playing everybody this year, because I think there’s about eight teams that could legitimately win it. And I think you see, if you don’t come ready to play, you could lose to anybody in the league.”
Denver is coming off an unusually busy week of four games, where they went 4-0. Jackson Joerger leads with 19.5 points per game, the fourth-most in the NICL.
The girls have gotten back above .500 with two straight wins, taking care of business against Wapsie Valley and Jesup last week. They’ll face a stiff test against the #6 (2A) Cyclones, the only team that’s undefeated in conference play. They’ll look to slow down Mylee Thurm, who leads with 14.2 points per game on 58 percent shooting.
The tipoff will be at 6:15 p.m.
