Playing its first rematches of the season, the Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams split with Denver at home Tuesday. The girls fell 50-39 and the boys won 59-48, avenging a loss in December.

The Falcon girls went point-for-point with the #6 (2A) Cyclones in the first quarter, tying 12-12 after the opening stanza. But a 12-minute stretch in the second and third quarters where they scored only two points was too much to overcome. Denver created separation that AP couldn’t close, despite scoring 22 points in the final nine minutes. Kolbie Wangsness led with 14 points.

The boys took control with a strong start, using a 27-9 run to help build a lead to as many as 36-19 in the first half before Denver closed the gap to 13 at halftime. The #8 (2A) Cyclones fought back, but never got closer than seven points. It was AP’s second straight win over a ranked team. Tyler Wedeking led with 21 points, Wes Shirk scored 15, and in his return from injury, Benny Waller scored 11.

They’ll return to action Friday by hosting Hudson.
