Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a state of disaster emergency for Iowa in response to heating fuel supply disruptions affecting much of the Midwest.

The proclamation cites high demand for heating products and limited pipeline capacity that have made it difficult to deliver propane and other heating fuels, particularly in rural areas of the state. State officials say the situation has created challenges for residents, livestock producers and fuel suppliers trying to meet winter heating needs.

Under the proclamation, certain hours-of-service regulations for commercial motor vehicle drivers transporting propane, heating oil, natural gas and other heating fuels are temporarily suspended. The move is intended to allow fuel deliveries to reach communities more quickly by giving drivers additional flexibility during the emergency period.

The order applies statewide and is limited to drivers hauling heating fuels for residential, agricultural and commercial use. Safety requirements related to driver fatigue, controlled substances and commercial driver licensing remain in effect. The disaster emergency took effect immediately and will remain in place for 14 days, expiring at 11:59 p.m. Jan. 29, unless extended or terminated sooner by the governor.
