Mason City police are investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday night near Casey’s at 9th Street and North Federal Avenue.

In a press release sent Friday, the Mason City Police Department says dispatch began receiving reports of multiple gunshots around 8:49 p.m. Officers responded and learned a 35-year-old man had been taken to the hospital by private vehicle. The victim suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and told police he does not know who shot him or why.

Police conducted a neighborhood canvass and spoke with numerous residents. Investigators also located shell casings outside the victim’s apartment at 729 North Federal Avenue.

Multiple tenants, including children, were inside the apartment buildings at 725 and 729 North Federal Avenue when the shots were fired.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mason City Police Department. Police say nuisance property abatement proceedings will be initiated against the landlord due to ongoing issues at the apartment.
