Snow squalls prompt travel caution across north central Iowa

Drivers across much of north central Iowa are being urged to use caution today as snow squalls bring the potential for localized whiteout conditions.

The National Weather Service says snow showers and brief but intense snow squalls are expected this afternoon as a cold front moves through the state. Visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less at times, with roads quickly becoming snow covered.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. for several area counties, including Franklin, Butler, Grundy, Wright, Hardin and Cerro Gordo. Northwest winds gusting between 35 and 50 miles per hour will further reduce visibility, especially during heavier snow bursts.

Forecasters say travel conditions could change rapidly from normal to near whiteout, particularly during the evening commute. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance and be prepared for sudden visibility drops.

For the latest road conditions, motorists can check the Iowa 511 app, visit 511ia.org, or dial 511.
