Hampton-Dumont-CAL placed fifth and Iowa Falls-Alden was fourth at Saturday’s North Central Conference Girls Wrestling Tournament, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel.

For the second consecutive season, #4 (1A-190) Maren Subbert of Hampton-Dumont-CAL brought home a conference title, taking the crown at 190. She defeated #2 (2A-190) Reagan Haynes of Algona in an 11-0 major decision in the championship match.

“Reagan is always tough,” Subbert says. “We’ve been kind of tough with each other since middle school, and ever since she bumped up weight classes this past year, I really like wrestling her because she really does give me a challenge. It was really nice having a pretty pretty eventful finals match in the heavier weights, because you don’t normally get that too much, but it was a really good match.”

Megan Severs took the title at 140. She and Lauryn Silvey of Iowa Falls-Alden went to overtime before Severs got a 7:30 pin to capture the gold. She says her conditioning paid off.

“I feel like conditioning really helped me win any of my matches today,” Severs says. “Brittany does a really, really, really good job of working us in conditioning. So I feel like that just really, really helped my matches today.”

Other top performers for the Bulldogs included second place finishes by Juliette Koch at 155 and Elsie Kuper at 170. Avalon Mulford was third at 235.

Sami Harms of Iowa Falls-Alden was among her team’s top performers, placing third at 110.

“My first match, I thought I did pretty good, I went against a really tough Clear Lake girl to start off my morning,” Harms says. “But then I’ve actually wrestled that Humboldt girl my freshman year multiple times and I’ve lost to her like three or four times. So that’s my first win against her. I knew I could do it all along and I was really happy that I won that, because after losing so many times against her, I knew what I needed to do, and it felt really good, and I wrestled really well.”

The Cadets had runner-up finishes by Brooklyn Gehling at 130 and Lauryn Silvey at 140. Aubree Silvey at 135 and Abigail Janssen at 170 each placed third.

In their next action, the Cadets will compete at Clear Lake Monday, and the Bulldogs will be at Ames Thursday.
