A unique winter recreation opportunity is returning to Franklin County later this month. Franklin County Conservation will host its annual Moonlight Ski and Shoe on Saturday, January 31st, at Maynes Grove south of Hampton, giving participants a chance to explore a moonlit trail by ski or snowshoe.
On a recent episode of the Outdoors in North Iowa podcast, Franklin and Wright County Naturalist Aubrey Brandt said participants will have time to explore the beauty of the night around the pond.
“Whether you choose to glide on cross-country skis or trek on snowshoes, you’ll experience an “otherworldly” atmosphere as the bright moonlight reflects off the fresh snow. It’s a perfect “peaceful escape” for families, friends, or a unique date night to connect with nature and find beauty in the stillness of the season. Bundle up, breathe in the crisp night air, and enjoy a glowing winter wonderland that only comes alive under the full moon.”
Brandt says those attending can bring their own equipment but the conservation board has snow shoes and skis available on a first come first serve basis.
If there is no snow for the event January 31st, the event will be moved to February 28th.
