The Franklin County Board of Supervisors has begun early budget discussions as it prepares for the upcoming fiscal year.

During budget workshops held Jan. 20 and 21, supervisors met with department heads from offices including the sheriff, auditor, treasurer, secondary roads, conservation, emergency management, dispatch, information technology and veterans affairs. Supervisors also reviewed their own budget, special projects and other miscellaneous items.

County officials chose to delay decisions on potential wage increases until after meeting with the county’s insurance broker to review projected health insurance costs.

In a separate regular meeting, supervisors approved an Iowa Department of Transportation detour agreement tied to the Highway 3 bridge replacement project, which will route traffic onto county roads. The board also heard multiple funding requests for fiscal year 2027 from community organizations, including the Franklin County Fair Board, county libraries, the Franklin County Development Association and the Hampton Senior Center, though no funding decisions were made.

Supervisors approved the hiring of a facilities operations coordinator, updated vehicle and mileage reimbursement policies and authorized a $64,000 operating transfer to Franklin County Conservation.
