Curling could see a boost in interest next month as the Winter Olympics get underway, and area residents won’t have to travel to Milan, Italy, to give the sport a try.
Emily Nelson, a spokeswoman for Cedar Rapids Curling, says the organization is offering several 90-minute “learn to curl” sessions over the coming weeks. Nelson says participants can learn the basics of curling in just a couple of hours, though mastering the sport can take a lifetime.
She says curling is highly accessible and can be enjoyed either as a workout or simply for fun.
Curling is believed to have originated on the frozen lochs and marshes of Scotland in the early 1500s. The modern game involves sliding large stones across the ice toward a target, with the goal of placing a stone closer to the center than an opponent’s.
Learn-to-curl sessions are scheduled for Feb. 17 and 24, and March 3 and 7. More information is available at cedarrapidscurling.com.
