Strong winds, blowing snow to impact travel across area today

Drivers across north-central Iowa are being urged to use caution today as a fast-moving winter storm brings strong winds, snow and blowing snow to the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for several area counties, including Franklin, Butler, Hardin, Grundy, Wright and Cerro Gordo.

Forecasters say snow accumulations are expected to be around an inch or less, but northwest winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour could significantly reduce visibility by blowing both falling snow and snow already on the ground. At times, visibility may drop below a quarter mile, creating near-blizzard conditions.

The combination of slippery roads, strong crosswinds and blowing snow is expected to make travel hazardous, particularly during the evening commute. Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down and allow extra travel time. For the latest road conditions, drivers can check the Iowa 511 app, visit 511ia.org, or dial 511.
