UPDATE: Blizzard warning issued for north-central Iowa

A Blizzard Warning is now in effect for much of north-central Iowa as strong winds and blowing snow create dangerous travel conditions today.

The National Weather Service says a fast-moving storm system is bringing snow showers and northwest winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour from late morning through tonight. While snowfall totals are expected to be around an inch or less, the strong winds will blow both falling snow and snow already on the ground, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less at times.

The Blizzard Warning runs until 11 p.m. and includes Franklin, Butler, Grundy, Wright and Cerro Gordo counties, along with much of northern Iowa. Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions are possible, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially during the evening commute.

Officials urge residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is unavoidable, drivers are encouraged to carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded.

For the latest road conditions, motorists can check the Iowa 511 app, visit 511ia.org, or dial 511.
