Extreme cold conditions are expected across north central Iowa tonight, with an Extreme Cold Warning in effect from 9 p.m. this evening through noon Friday.
The National Weather Service says dangerously cold wind chills could drop as low as 40 below zero, creating a serious risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
The warning includes Franklin, Wright, Cerro Gordo, Hardin, and Butler counties, along with surrounding portions of northern, northeastern and central Iowa.
An Extreme Cold Watch is also in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, with another round of potentially dangerous wind chills possible Friday night into Saturday.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, including hats, face masks and gloves if going outdoors. Officials also recommend keeping pets indoors, checking frequently on elderly neighbors and family members, and using space heaters safely. Generators and grills should never be used indoors.
Travelers and outdoor workers are urged to limit exposure and take precautions as conditions deteriorate overnight.
