The first-ever North Iowa Cedar League Girls Wrestling Tournament will take place Monday, hosted by AP/GC. It’ll air on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel.
AP/GC Coach Joel Reints says the tournament is a step in the right direction on the mission to elevate girls wrestling to equal status as boys wrestling.
“I think what we’re trying to do as a girls program is just get on the same level as the boys,” Reints says. “And you’ve got to do all those things. You’ve got to have a conference tournament. Next, I would like to see consistent conference duals just as we do on the boys side. So it’s got the same feel to it. Uou want to talk about equality, that’s what that is in my mind.”
Among AP/GC’s leaders, Grace Storjohann is 34-3 at 125 and Zoey Uhlenhopp is 29-11 at 155.
AGWSR enters off a 16th place finish at a tournament at Oelwein Saturday. Brooklynn Simons is 19-7 at 190 and Donnaly Garcia is 7-2 at 105.
BCLUW-SH’s Taya Hollingsworth is 44-2 at 155 and Megyn Hollingsworth is 35-7 at 170, among the team’s top records.
