President Donald Trump said top GOP leaders in Congress are working on a deal that would allow year-round sales of E15, the fuel blend that contains 15 percent ethanol.

Speaking during a stop in Iowa on Tuesday, Trump said he is trusting the House speaker and the Senate majority leader to reach an agreement that works for farmers, consumers and refiners.

The Environmental Protection Agency has cited smog concerns as the reason E15 is not currently approved for summer sales.

Language that would have allowed year-round E15 sales was removed from a government spending bill last week following pushback from House critics.

Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Executive Director Monte Shaw said that if the federal government adopts the policy, it would significantly expand ethanol demand, adding that Trump would become the “godfather of E15.”
