The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams each defeated West Fork at home Thursday, as aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel. The Falcons won the girls game 70-35 and the #10 (2A) boys won 69-42.
In the girls game, the Falcons put together one of their more thorough first halves of the season, scoring 22 and 21 in the first two periods for a 43-22 halftime lead. With the defense playing soundly and forcing numerous turnovers, they put the running clock rule into effect midway through the third quarter to quickly finish the game.
“Eva shot it pretty well to start the game, and that got us going a little bit,” Head Coach Brady Driscol says. “We’ve talked about for several games now about trying to put together a good four quarters worth of game out there. We’ve had a good half here and there, a good second half here and there, but I thought tonight was probably one of our better four quarter complete games that we’ve had.”
Eva Walker scored a career-high 23 points, Kolbie Wangsness added 16 and Lorna Bernard scored 10. Brylee Dickman led West Fork with 14.
The Falcon boys used a strong start to lead 18-7 after the first quarter, and grew it to 30-17 at halftime. AP grew its lead to as many as 20, but the Warhawks remained composed and cut it to 14. The Falcons finished the game without further issue and made a late surge with bench players in the game.
“It was good, but we need to get better coming up because postseason’s coming up and we just need to keep working,” senior Trevan Thomas says. “They’re a decent team, and we just need to keep working on our D, get better at that, and trust our teammates.”
Tyler Wedeking led with 16 points, Charlie Wessels had 12 and Benny Waller scored 10. Zander Hansen led West Fork with 13 points.
On Friday, AP will host Columbus Catholic and West Fork will be at Saint Ansgar at 6:15 p.m.
