The Hampton-Dumont School Board met Monday and approved several projects related to recent property purchases and facility repairs. Board members approved a nearly $60,000 quote from Mason City Glass Service to repair and replace the high school’s front entry door, which was damaged when a vehicle struck the building in December.
Superintendent Tim Felderman says the damage to the high school’s front entrance was extensive and required major repairs.
“So as a result of the damage that occurred that night, we do have to replace the front vestibules, both the exterior and interior paints of glass that are there. That also involves, of course, the security of those front doors and security cameras. We were very lucky in the need to replace the damaged cafeteria tables. We were able to find a vendor out of Chicago that was replacing those tables within three days. But then there’s also some wall coverings, some door damage by the kitchen area too. So we are well on our way to having a full functioning and commons that we have again.”
Board members approved a $57,500 demolition quote from Cole Excavating of Greene for the district-owned property at 510 4th Street SE, along with a $29,850 asbestos removal quote from Advanced Environmental. The board also approved a contract with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which will reimburse up to 75% of asbestos abatement costs, capped at $25,000, through its Brownfield Grant Program.
The board approved donating unused high school cafeteria tables to Revitalize Dumont and discussed a proposed graduation requirement change adding a Health I course for the class of 2030.
