The race for Iowa state treasurer is taking shape ahead of the November election, with John Norwood entering the contest. Norwood announced his campaign Monday.
Norwood, a Democrat from West Des Moines, said his campaign will focus on safeguarding the Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System, strengthening oversight of state finances, expanding access to retirement savings options and improving financial literacy for Iowans. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and earned a master’s degree in environmental management and an MBA in finance from Yale University. Norwood currently serves as a business adviser with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program.
The office is currently held by Republican Roby Smith, who has served as state treasurer since 2022, when he defeated longtime officeholder Michael Fitzgerald.
