The Hampton-Dumont-CAL basketball teams were swept by Algona on the road Friday night. The Bulldog girls lost 61-38, while the Bulldog boys fell 73-58, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.

The Bulldog girls stayed close in the first half, trailing by five at the break after a late 3-pointer by Algona as time expired in the second quarter. Algona took control in the third quarter with a 23-point outburst and sealed the win by adding 11 more points in the fourth.

MacKenzy Valley led the Bulldogs with 22 points, while Madison Heilskov added nine.

Brady Harr scored a game-high 35 points for the Bulldog boys. Hampton-Dumont-CAL held a two-point lead at halftime, but Algona pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 41-24. Head Coach Matt Lokenvitz.

“You just have to want it more than the other team,” says Lokenvitz. “When you come and you travel to a place like Algona, great fans. It’s a really good team. They’re 13-5 now and they’re playing really well and they’re a good basketball team. They’re super athletic. When you’re able to go up against a team like that, you have to want it more than they do. And we saw it, loose balls. They were diving on the floor. They were jumping it. They were beating us to it for a lot of those. In the second half, they just, I mean, we had a two point lead at halftime. They just wanted it a little bit more than we did towards the end.”

The Bulldog girls close out the regular season Tuesday at home against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. The Bulldog boys will also host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Tuesday, then play Aplington-Parkersburg at home Feb. 12 before finishing the regular season on the road at Clear Lake on Feb. 13.
