The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys wrestling team placed third in Class 2A at Saturday’s IHSAA Dual Team State Tournament, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.
In the opening round, the #2-seed Cowboys took care of business in a 50-18 win over #7-seed Algona. The lower weights were dominant to set the tone, and they clinched it with several matches remaining. But they met their match against #3-seed Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, the eventual champion, in the semifinal. The Rockets won nine matches, and held the Cowboys to very few bonus points. CGD bounced back in the third place dual by defeating #5-seed Independence 36-23 in a back-and-forth dual. Head Coach Cory Yoder says he was proud of the bounce back after falling short of their goal of a championship.
“Great finish, way to come back after a tough semifinal loss,” Yoder says. “That one hurt a little bit. Our goal has been all year to win the state title, dual state title. We came up one short, we’ve got the second best thing third place. So hey, kudos to the kids for coming back after a hard loss.”
It was the second straight season the team placed third in the tournament.
They’ll now turn their attention to next weekend’s individual state qualifying meet at Webster City.
