With warmer temperatures expected this week, officials are warning Iowans that ice conditions on lakes across the state are changing rapidly.
Conservation officers with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say ice-related activities such as fishing and off-highway vehicle riding are becoming increasingly dangerous as ice deteriorates.
Officials say the lack of snow cover is accelerating ice melt, allowing sunshine and warmer temperatures to crack and weaken the ice. The DNR says areas near shorelines are often the first to become unsafe.
The DNR urges anyone venturing onto the ice to check thickness frequently, wear a life jacket, carry flotation devices and rope, and stay clear of open water.
