Many people experience a mid-afternoon energy slump after lunch, but Iowa State University Extension says a few simple habits can help.
During a recent appearance on the Extension Report podcast, Health and Human Sciences Educator Amy Jones says light physical activity and time outside can boost alertness, while choosing balanced meals can prevent energy crashes.
“Instead of reaching for more caffeine, take a short walk. Just a few minutes of movement can increase blood flow and help you feel more alert. Get some sun. Spending time outside in natural light helps your body produce vitamin D, which plays a role in mood and energy levels. Eat a balanced lunch. Meals high in sugar and white bread or pasta can lead to an energy crash. Choose foods with fiber, healthy fats, protein and whole grains to stay energized longer.”
She also emphasizes the importance of getting enough sleep each night to stay productive during the day.
“Poor sleep can leave you feeling drained the next day. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. Even doing one of these tips can help you feel more awake, focused and ready to finish your day strong.”
