
The National Weather Service summary for 2025 shows the number of confirmed tornadoes in Iowa was below average.
NWS meteorologist Kristy Carter said there were 32 confirmed tornadoes, compared with an average of about 50. In 2024, there were 125 confirmed tornadoes.
There were no reported injuries or deaths from tornadoes in 2025.
Tornadoes are rated on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which ranges from EF0 to EF5, with EF5 being the most severe. A majority of last year’s tornadoes were at the lower end of the scale. Carter said 22 were rated EF0 or EFU. EFU tornadoes are those that did not hit damage indicators and could not be assigned a rating.
There were seven EF1 tornadoes and three EF2 tornadoes. None were rated higher than EF2.
The longest tornado path was 20 miles for a twister that touched down in Fremont and Page counties. The peak hour for tornadoes in 2025 was 3 p.m.
