AGWSR heading to GMG for girls basketball playoffs

The AGWSR girls basketball team will travel to GMG for a 1A Region 5 first round game Thursday, which’ll air on 104.9 KLMJ.
Head Coach David Koop says the team has gotten closer to its first win, and it has shown by some closer margins in the final two regular season games.

“We’re starting to play more as a team,” Koop says. “You talk about it all the time, you want to be playing your best basketball when you get to the postseason. And some teams struggle with that. Last year, I thought we weren’t playing necessarily our best when we got to the postseason. And with this year’s team, it’s different about what our best is than previous years. But from day one to now, we are night and day a better team, and we continue to get better. We just have to put it together for four quarters, and we haven’t done that yet. We get a little closer every game and the scores keep getting a little closer. So hopefully we can put it all together here versus GMG.”

The Wolverines (11-10) won four of their final six regular season games, and are led by Skyler Murty with 8.7 points per game. Koop sees some similarities between the teams.

“We gotta stop their posts and make sure we stay in front and we are getting rebounds. If we can get them in foul trouble, I think that’ll be one of the storylines of the game, which team gets in foul trouble first. I don’t know that either team has a really deep bench. They’ve played nine, 10 girls, but they have their six or seven or eight that they like to play. We’ll see how the game’s officiated. If it’s tight, we’ve got to keep our hands off. I think we can compete with them. They’re just like us. They’ve got two seniors and then a bunch of freshmen and sophomores. We have two seniors and then a bunch of underclassmen and some juniors. I think it’s just gonna be who makes more free throws, who turns it over less, and then who puts the ball in the hoop more.”

The winner will advance to a quarterfinal against either BCLUW or Meskwaki Settlement. Pregame coverage will start at 6:45 p.m., followed by the tipoff at 7:00.
