Bo Brass, a 2015 Hampton-Dumont graduate, recently graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge in Johnston after completing the 16-week program.

Brass joined the Hampton Police Department in April 2025 and spent several months training with department officers while preparing for the academy. Brass tells RadioOnTheGo News the academy was a big step in his training and gave him a real look at what the job requires.

“It just kind of gives you like a baseline of again how to respond to calls for service, how to interact with people to kind of get to the root of the problem. It also gives you background on like case law and why certain decisions have to be made based off of like the laws that already set in place, especially going back to like the First Amendment, Second, Third, Fourth, so on. Those really play a factor in everything too.”

Prior to joining the department, Brass served four years in the United States Air Force at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona.

“When I first went to UNI, I didn’t anticipate graduating with a criminology degree. I switched majors quite a few times before I landed on criminology and I ended up kind of falling in love with it. And then while I was in the Air Force, was Security Forces, which is the Air Force version of like military police, because I figured it wasn’t as much law enforcement related as I thought it would be, but it definitely still gave me the experience, kind of beginning experience in a sense with law enforcement and just getting used to responding to calls and talking to people and being able to make decisions under pressure, and which led me to here where I just wanted to continue that.”

With his academy training now complete, Brass is officially on duty as a full-time Hampton police officer, working patrol and assisting with department operations across the city.
