The AGWSR boys basketball team will begin the playoffs Friday by hosting West Hancock in a 1A District 14 Preliminary Round game. It’ll air on 99 The Wave.
The Cougars (5-16) closed the regular season with a 67-43 win over Colo-Nesco Monday, by far their widest margin of victory of the season. That night, Bo Starr scored 22 points, with 17 added by Blake Willems, with 15 assists as a team. Head Coach Ryley Schipper says that’s a key to success.
“We’ve got to share the basketball most importantly, play together as a team, and really our defense has got to be solid,” Schipper says. “We’ve got to lock in on our scouting reports and understand which guys we’ve got to stop and where they’re going to look to get their shots, and we’ve got to maximize our shot potential and where we can get shots. We’re really good when we attack the rim instead of just settling for easy shots. So we’ve really got to work on attacking the rim, finding the easy buckets instead of the one pass shot. And then defensively making sure we’re just we’re all on the same page for the whole game and understand that a couple of mistakes, especially in playoff time can end your season. So guys have really been locked in. We’re excited to get to the postseason.”
West Hancock (2-18) has lost four straight entering the playoffs. Keagan Albertson leads with 10.9 points per game, along with 9.8 by Paxton Johnson. It’ll be the first meeting between the teams since 2016.
Pregame coverage will start at 6:45 p.m., followed by the tipoff at 7:00. The winner will advance to a first round game at #1 (1A) St. Edmond.
