The AGWSR boys basketball team fell to West Hancock 61-51 Friday in a 1A District 14 preliminary round game, as aired on 99 The Wave.
The Eagles got out to the early lead and never gave it up, extending it to as many as eight on multiple occasions in the first half. The Cougars couldn’t manage many rebounds, giving their opponent many more opportunities for shots. After trailing by 11 in the second half, Blake Willems hit consecutive three-pointers to cut the deficit to four. But West Hancock answered and sealed the game at the free throw line.
“We don’t like to go into our man very often, but we had to switch to that,” Head Coach Ryley Schipper says. We didn’t rebound very well tonight. The offensive boards really kind of killed us, but we still had chances. We had chances, and they hit some big shots in the fourth quarter. I think they made back to back threes, two straight possessions. And again, just not getting the loose ball here and there. But we continued to fight. Bo had a really, really good night. Blake was still battling out there. And even though he struggled shooting it, he managed to still fight through. Proud of the way we fought, but yeah, just dug a hole too early and just didn’t manage to get ourselves all the way out of it.”
Bo Starr led with 24 points and William Hofmeister scored eight.
Their season has ended at 5-17.
