Tax season is now in full swing, and filers are being urged to prepare early and be aware of several changes that could affect their returns.

Barb Wollan, a health and human sciences educator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, encourages taxpayers to gather necessary documents in advance to help ensure timely processing and maximize potential refunds.

Low- and moderate-income households may qualify for free assistance through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, where IRS-certified volunteers prepare and electronically file returns. Most households earning less than $69,000 are eligible, provided their returns do not involve more complex issues such as rental or farm income. VITA sites are located across Iowa, including at several extension offices.

New for 2025 are deductions for voluntary tip income, overtime pay and a $6,000 senior deduction for those age 65 and older. In addition, the IRS will no longer issue paper refund checks, requiring taxpayers to provide direct deposit information to receive refunds.
