The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office responded Friday to a report of a dispute involving a firearm in the 2400 block of Viking Avenue, east of Readlyn.
Authorities said the call came in at approximately 11:24 a.m., with reports that a firearm had been discharged. When deputies arrived, they were told the suspect had left the residence and walked into a nearby field. A perimeter was established with assistance from multiple agencies.
The Wapsie Valley Community School District was notified and placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Drones were used to locate the suspect hiding along a tree line in a marsh about three hours later. A 31-year-old Waterloo man, William K. Shindoll, was taken into custody without incident.
Shindoll was transported to the Bremer County Jail and charged with going armed with intent, first-degree harassment, assault while participating in a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Bond was set at $17,000.
Assisting agencies included the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DNR and several area law enforcement and emergency response units.
