The Clarksville girls basketball team will travel to Newman Catholic for a Class 1A Region 2 quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Both teams finished runner-up in their respective conferences, the Indians in the Iowa Star North and the Knights in the Top of Iowa East.
Clarksville (16-7) opened the postseason with a 60-40 win at home over Northwood-Kensett on Thursday, February 12. Paige Kampman had a team leading 27 points and Hannah Wangsness delivered a triple double with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists against the Vikings. The Indians defense has tested opponents by allowing 39.7 points per game (second least in the Iowa Star North). Head Coach Ross Timmermans shares his scouting report on the Knights and message to the team ahead of the matchup.
“They’ve got some elite guards, they all handle it, they’re all quick, they’re athletic, they shoot it well. We’re gonna have to understand our matchups. We’re gonna have to understand what they want to do offensively. Hopefully take some things away from them,” says Timmermans. “Turning the mind off and getting the body ready to compete. Going out and letting your body do what it’s done all season long, muscle memory. Just kinda letting any nervous thoughts go, just play the game and have fun doing it.”
Newman Catholic (15-6) concluded the regular season with a 76-49 win over West Fork on Monday, February 9. The Knights offensive efficiency is aided by 14.5 assists per game (leads the TIC-East). Sami Kruckenberg leads the team with 17 points per game.
Action will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Mason City. The winner will advance to a regional semifinal against either Lake Mills or Cedar Ridge Christian.
