The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Iowa — except the state’s extreme southwest counties — from 6 p.m. Thursday (2/19) until 6 a.m. Friday (2/20). Snow is expected, with total accumulations between two and five inches. Roads will likely become slippery, and the hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution. Travel conditions can be checked on the Iowa 511 app, at 511ia.org, or by dialing 5-1-1.
In addition, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening (2/18) for portions of northern and central Iowa, with west winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour and gusts up to 50. Finally, a Red Flag Warning is also in effect until 7 p.m. for central Iowa due to strong winds and low humidity, creating critical fire danger.
To recap: a Winter Weather Advisory tomorrow night (2/19) into Friday (2/20) morning for most of the state, a Wind Advisory through early evening tonight (2/18), and a Red Flag Warning for central Iowa. More information is available at weather.gov/DesMoines.
