The Aplington-Parkersburg girls basketball team earned a 56-41 home win over South Winneshiek in a 2A Region 4 quarterfinal Tuesday, as aired on 99 The Wave.
In the fourth meeting in five seasons between the programs, the Warriors gave the Falcons their toughest test. AP scored the game’s first 12 points, jumping out to a commanding advantage. Despite never trailing, they faced some pressure when South Winneshiek pulled to within a possession late in the first half. In the second half, the tenacious press defense of the Falcons created numerous Warrior turnovers, and AP finished the win without further issue.
“Kind of how we figured it’d be,” Head Coach Brady Driscol says. “They play fast, they play very aggressive, they get after you, the whole length of the floor, makes and misses. So it’s a different team than what we’ve seen in the past from them. They do a great job, had a good year this year and a lot of credit to them. But I think what helped us out was that early 10-0 jump to jump start us to start the game. I think we started out 10-0 and then really didn’t get much more than 10 throughout the rest of the game. So that was a huge run for us to start the game defensively. We knew coming in that 32 and 5 from them could shoot a little bit. And they had four combined threes in the first half, which was really disappointing to see. But in the second half, after going over it again and making sure that we’re on lockdown on those two, we kept them to maybe one field goal combined in the second half. And it wasn’t a three. So really locking in on who we needed to take out for them I think those all contributed to the win.”
Lorna Bernard and Kolbie Wangsness each scored 15 points, with 11 added by Ava Eddy.
The Falcons have advanced to Friday’s regional semifinal at #4 (2A) Denver, which’ll air on 99 The Wave.
