North Iowa ice fishing season winds down amid safety concerns

Ice fishing season is winding down across north Iowa as deteriorating ice conditions create hazardous situations on several lakes.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, multiple vehicles have broken through the ice in recent days. A UTV fell through on East Okoboji Lake, while a pickup truck broke through to its frame on West Okoboji Lake. Earlier Wednesday, a wheelhouse-style ice fishing shelter also went through the ice on West Okoboji. The UTV has been recovered, and officials say the pickup and shelter are in the process of being removed.

DNR Law Enforcement Supervisor Greg Harson says ice quality is deteriorating quickly and can vary greatly from one location to another. He noted most local anglers have already put their gear away for the season.

Much of the north side of Spirit Lake is now ice-free, and ice heaves near shore have opened on Clear Lake. Officials say even with more seasonal temperatures returning, overnight lows will not be cold enough to restore safe ice conditions.

Anyone venturing out is urged to go on foot, frequently check ice thickness and carry safety equipment, including a flotation cushion and rope.
