The Rockwell City Council approved a new ordinance Wednesday aimed at addressing neglected vacant properties in the community.

During its regular meeting, the council unanimously adopted an ordinance which establishes a neglected vacant property registration and abatement program.

The ordinance requires owners of buildings vacant for 180 days or more to register the property with the city within 30 days. The annual registration and administrative fee will be $25.

Under the ordinance, property owners must provide contact information, identify lienholders and outline a plan for bringing the property into compliance with city codes. Civil penalties for violations start at $1,500 for a first offense and increase to $3,000 for subsequent offenses.
