A Waterloo woman who purchased a handgun for her underage boyfriend has been sentenced to federal prison.
Arryel Skye Waters, 24, of Waterloo, was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids to 12 months and one day in prison after pleading guilty to one count of making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm.
According to evidence presented at plea and sentencing hearings, Waters attempted to buy a gun from a Cedar Falls business in July 2023 but was denied the sale after employees questioned whether she was the actual buyer. She later purchased a Glock handgun from another Cedar Falls store, indicating on required paperwork that the gun was for herself. Prosecutors said she was actually buying it for her 17-year-old boyfriend.
In November 2023, the boyfriend used the firearm to confront employees at a Waterloo business where Waters worked as a delivery driver. He was later arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including felon in possession of a firearm due to a prior burglary conviction.
Chief U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams also ordered Waters to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with Cedar Falls and Waterloo police.
