The City of Sheffield is launching a new text messaging service designed to help residents stay informed.

City officials announced the introduction of TextMyGov, a platform that allows residents to receive important notifications and access city information by text message. The service will officially launch March 2.

Residents may receive an initial text from the number 91896. Those who do not receive a message can opt in by texting “SHEFFIELD” to 91896 and replying “YES” to confirm. Participants can opt out at any time by texting “STOP.”

Through the service, residents can sign up for alerts about events, announcements and town services. For pool notifications, residents can text “SHEFFIELDPOOL” to 91896, and for library notifications, text “SHEFFIELDLIBRARY” to 91896.

In the coming weeks, residents will also be able to receive on-demand information 24/7 by texting keywords to 641-630-6393 for details about ordinances, water, sewer and other city services.

City officials say the new system is aimed at improving communication and enhancing resident services.
