The #7 (2A) Grundy Center girls basketball team will go for a second state tournament appearance in three years when it faces #8 (2A) Regina Catholic in the 2A Region 8 Final Wednesday at Benton. It’ll air on 99 The Wave.

The Spartans have had two convincing playoff wins, defeating South Hardin and Jesup in the first two rounds to advance. They’ve shot nearly 50 percent throughout the postseason while holding opponents to an average of 40 points.

“Defense is definitely our calling card, sustaining that and doing a good job of knowing personnel,” Head Coach Matt Lindeman says. “That’s really what a lot of it comes down to in the postseason, is knowing the personnel that you’re going to go against. For us offensively, being able to just play as consistent as we possibly can and do a great job of taking care of the ball and getting good ball movement and finding the open person. I think the consistent piece that we’ve had throughout the year is that on any given night, we’ve got one or two girls that step up and get us the points that are needed, as well as then we have a nice nucleus that are always bringing in seven, eight points somewhere in there. So we’re a hard team to defend when we’re firing on all cylinders. That’s going to be the key for us, is to be able to do that on the offensive end.”

Regina has recorded two lopsided playoff wins over Danville and Van Buren County to advance. With 22.3, Addie McLaughlin is fourth in 2A in points per game, and leads 2A in assists per game with 6.3.

Pregame coverage will start at 6:45 p.m., followed by the tipoff at 7:00.
