Fatal crash in Hancock County Wednesday morning claims two lives

A two-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning on Highway 18 in Hancock County has left two people dead and two others injured. The accident occurred at approximately 4:37 a.m., about a quarter-mile east of Oak Avenue, or west of Garner.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 46-year-old Angel Ruiz-Tamayo of Clarion was heading westbound on Highway 18 when it lost control on ice-covered roads and collided with an eastbound 2013 Kia Sorento, driven by 51-year-old Jason Foell of Britt.

Both the driver of the Silverado, Ruiz-Tamayo, and the rear passenger, 40-year-old Constantino Cruz Barradas of Goodell, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Both were transported to the state medical examiner’s office.

Injured in the crash were Jason Foell, and 41-year-old Tomas San Juan Ruiz of Belmond, the front passenger in the Silverado, who were both wearing seatbelts. Both were transported to MercyOne North Iowa in Mason City for treatment of injuries. 

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Responding agencies included the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Garner Fire and Ambulance, Clear Lake Police Department and Ambulance and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
