Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has announced a statewide tree planting initiative to mark America’s 250th birthday.
The youth-driven effort, organized in partnership with Iowa 4-H and Iowa FFA Association, aims to plant 250 trees across Iowa in 2026. The project is designed to connect students with the state’s agricultural heritage while promoting stewardship and community service.
Naig says planting a tree is a simple act that benefits future generations and provides an opportunity for Iowa youth to honor the nation’s history while strengthening their communities.
A kickoff event is planned for Arbor Day, April 24, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Naig will join Iowa 4-H and FFA members to plant a burr oak, Iowa’s state tree, as the official Iowa America250 tree on the fairgrounds.
Local 4-H clubs and FFA chapters are encouraged to organize their own tree planting events that day, invite community members to participate and share photos on social media using the hashtag #IowaAmerica250.
The initiative is supported by Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers and Frazier Nursery, which will provide regional delivery of trees ordered through the program.
