The Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa State Patrol are beginning to reopen several major highways that were closed during this weekend’s blizzard.

Interstate 35 reopened in both directions from Ames to the Minnesota state line around 10 a.m. Monday.

Interstate 80 has also been reopening in stages. The stretch from Council Bluffs to West Des Moines reopened around 10:30 a.m., while the section from the Des Moines and Altoona area east to Iowa City reopened around noon.

The Iowa 415 Mile Long Bridge over Saylorville Lake reopened earlier Monday morning.

While conditions have improved, transportation officials say drivers should still use caution as some roads remain snow-covered or icy. Blowing snow and low temperatures are also limiting the effectiveness of road treatments.

Travelers can check the latest road conditions by visiting 511ia.org, the 511 app, or by calling 511.
