A Stratford-area farmer has announced plans to run for the Iowa House of Representatives.

Brian Young has announced his candidacy for Iowa House District 55. The district includes Franklin and Hamilton counties, along with parts of Wright and Story counties.

Young is a sixth-generation farmer and is running for public office for the first time. In a statement announcing his campaign, Young says he wants to ensure the district continues to have strong conservative leadership in Des Moines. He says his priorities include supporting tax relief, opposing the use of eminent domain for private gain and advocating for pro-life policies.

Young grew up on his family’s farm outside Stratford and later attended Emmaus University in Dubuque, where he met his wife, Sarah. The couple returned to the area to farm with Young’s father and grandfather and are now raising their five children.

Young also serves as a deacon at Countryside Bible Chapel and has been involved with the local Farm Bureau board for 19 years.

The Republican primary election will be held June 2.
