Butler County Conservation is shifting into its spring workload, with several projects and programs already underway.

As aired on the “Outdoors in North Iowa” podcast, Naturalist Annette Wittrock says crews are preparing a section of trail between Dumont and the Franklin County line for paving later this year.

“Part of our staff has been out working to get a section of trail between Dumont and the Franklin County line prepared for paving that’s going to take place later this year,” says Wittrock. “So they’ve been cutting back trees above the trail and those that are too close to the sides of what will be the paved trail. The project is hopefully going to be completed by the end of the year, but we’ll definitely keep you updated with our progress throughout the year. The project will not start until at least fall though, so don’t get too excited.”

In addition to trail work, conservation staff are preparing for the prescribed burn season and planning improvements at Shell Rock Park, including a new playground installation.

Wittrock also says summer programming is filling up quickly.

“We also have opened our summer camp registrations for this year and many of them are already nearing capacity,” says Wittrock. “So we offer camps for kids ages 2 to 15. Some camps are only an hour or two long, others are four days in a row for full immersion in their outdoor adventures. So if you haven’t checked those out, make sure you find all those offerings on mycountyparks.com.”
