Bryson Zabel has withdrawn from the Republican primary for Iowa House District 55, citing family priorities and the demands of a competitive race.

Zabel, a rural Hampton teacher who announced his candidacy earlier this month, said in a social media post Tuesday that the “full intensity of campaigning” is not the right fit at this stage of his life. He and his wife have two young children, and he emphasized that being present as a husband and father must come first.

The seat is open following Shannon Latham’s decision not to seek reelection in 2026 after accepting a leadership role with the Iowa FFA Foundation.

Zabel thanked supporters and noted he collected more than 50 signatures while exploring the campaign.

The Republican primary field for Iowa House District 55 now includes Beau Klaver of Kamrar, Brian Young of Stratford and Kurtis Bower of Roland. All three candidates are seeking the GOP nomination for the open seat in 2026.
