A 41-year-old Waterloo man has been sentenced to federal prison for filing false tax returns, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa.

Tresor Mugogo Ngoy was sentenced March 13 in Cedar Rapids to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to filing a false tax return.

According to the release, evidence showed Ngoy filed fraudulent returns for himself from 2017 through 2022 and prepared more than 50 false returns for others, claiming more than $250,000 in refunds.

Officials say he was typically paid between $100 and $300 to prepare the returns.

Ngoy was also ordered to pay more than $250,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and will serve one year of supervised release following his prison term.

Ngoy is being held in U.S. Marshals Service custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division.
