Residents across the area are being urged to stay alert as Hardin County Emergency Management joins agencies across Iowa in highlighting the first two focus days of Severe Weather Awareness Week, running March 23–27.

Monday centers on lightning safety, with reminders that storms can develop quickly and become dangerous. A simple rule applies: when thunder roars, go indoors. Seeking shelter in a sturdy building or enclosed vehicle can significantly reduce risk during fast-moving storms.

Tuesday shifts attention to tornado safety, a critical concern in Iowa’s spring and summer seasons. Emergency managers remind residents to understand the difference between a tornado watch and warning. A watch means conditions are favorable, while a warning signals immediate danger. In that case, residents should move quickly to a basement or interior room on the lowest level.

The annual statewide tornado drill will take place Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. All residents, along with schools, businesses and community organizations, are encouraged to participate in the drill.
