U.S. agriculture officials are launching a new nationwide effort to promote transparency in food labeling.
On National Agriculture Day, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced a public awareness campaign aimed at educating producers about the “Product of USA” labeling standard, which took effect Jan. 1.
Under the voluntary standard, the label can only be used on meat, poultry and egg products from animals that were born, raised, harvested and processed in the United States. Officials say the change is designed to give consumers clearer information and ensure fairness for domestic producers.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the new standard replaces a previous policy that allowed imported products to carry the label after limited processing.
Federal officials say the campaign is part of a broader effort to strengthen the U.S. food supply chain and support American farmers and ranchers, as the country has lost more than 100,000 family farms over the past decade.
