Iowa law enforcement to crack down on distracted driving during April enforcement period

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and Iowa officials are reminding drivers to stay focused behind the wheel.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force and law enforcement agencies across the state April 6 through April 10 to enforce Iowa’s hands-free driving law. The effort aims to educate drivers and increase compliance with the law.

The hands-free law took effect July 1, 2025, with a warning period before citations began Jan. 1. Since then, law enforcement has issued more than 2,400 citations and more than 1,900 warnings. The law prohibits the use of electronic devices beyond a single touch unless they are in hands-free mode.

Officials say the law has contributed to a historic low number of traffic fatalities in 2025.

Drivers are encouraged to use options such as voice commands, Bluetooth, speakerphone or phone mounts to remain compliant. Violations are considered a moving offense and carry a $170 fine.

State officials say the enforcement effort is focused on reducing distracted driving and improving safety on Iowa roadways.
