The Iowa House and Senate both read resolutions today commemorating the 150th anniversary of the legislation establishing the University of Northern Iowa taking effect.
According to the University of Northern Iowa, Civil War veteran and Iowa Sen. Edward G. Miller first prepared a bill to establish the Iowa State Normal School in 1874 but did not bring it to a vote. The following year, Cedar Falls attorney H.C. Hemenway renewed momentum and worked with Miller to advance the measure.
The Legislature passed the bill March 14, 1876, and it was signed into law two days later. The measure took effect March 26, 1876, laying the foundation for what is now the University of Northern Iowa.
