Railroads continue to play a vital role in keeping the nation’s supply chain moving, even as new technologies reshape how goods are transported across the country.

According to the Iowa Business Report, the efficiency and reach of rail systems remain essential to connecting producers and consumers nationwide. Speaking on the program, Michael Toth of the Civitas Institute says rail is at the center of economic stability.

“It is a tremendously central part of a vibrant economy and a sustainable economy right now. I mean, we’re talking about, you know, the movement of our entire supply chain—agricultural products, energy products, pharmaceutical products, chemical products; right? I mean we’re talking about essentially connecting producers and consumers in the world’s number one global economy, which is the United States of America.”

Toth says railroads not only support today’s supply chain demands but are also well-positioned for future innovation, including automation and artificial intelligence, which could further improve efficiency.

Rail has long been a backbone of American commerce, dating back more than 150 years to the completion of the transcontinental railroad, linking communities like Council Bluffs to the West Coast. With ongoing concerns about supply chain disruptions, experts say continued investment in rail infrastructure and technology will be key to maintaining a strong and reliable economy.
