Mason City house fire caused by improper disposal of smoking materials

The Mason City Fire Department responded to a house fire Tuesday morning at 825 12th St. SE in Mason City.

According to a press release, crews were called at about 7:24 a.m. and found the occupants safely outside upon arrival. Firefighters located a fire on the exterior of the home near the back door and quickly extinguished it. The interior sustained light smoke, but no active fire was found.

Crews ventilated the home and removed sections of aluminum siding to check for any fire extension. Officials say the fire was unintentional and caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.

No injuries were reported and fire crews remained on scene until about 9:23 a.m. The Mason City Fire Department was assisted by Mason City police, city building and electrical inspectors, and Alliant Energy.
