A bill that would give Iowans a clear right to repair their farm equipment has cleared initial review in the Iowa House.
The president of the Iowa Farmers Union says some manufacturers are voluntarily providing farmers with information on how to repair tractors, combines and other equipment, but the bill would establish enforceable standards.
As written, the bill would require manufacturers to provide access to software guiding users through repairs. However, key lawmakers say an access fee may be added.
Farm implement dealers have voiced opposition. A lobbyist for Deere & Company says facilitating repairs is already part of John Deere’s business model and argues the bill would disrupt a competitive marketplace.
